New York Reassessing Building Code to Limit Storm Damage

In the countdown to Hurricane Sandy last month, construction workers on a teeming pier in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, rushed to strap down materials and move forklifts and excavators into half-built structures to shield them from the tempest to come.

But the real storm preparations had been accomplished six years earlier, when Sims Metal Management approved a design for a state-of-the-art city recycling plant that is rising at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.

Reviewing projections for local sea-level rise, the company and its architects decided to elevate portions of the site to heights exceeding city requirements by four feet. Using recycled glass and crushed rock discarded from projects like the Second Avenue subway line, they raised the foundation for the plant?s four buildings and a dock.

The fill added $550,000 to the plant?s costs of around $100 million, said Thomas Outerbridge, Sims Metal?s general manager.

But it proved more than worth it. When a 12-foot storm surge swept through nearby streets and parking lots on Oct. 29, the plant?s dock and partly completed buildings did not flood.

?It paid for itself long before we expected it,? Mr. Outerbridge said. ?It was built with the idea that, over the next 40 years, this would prove a prudent thing ? and the proof came during construction.?

For years, experts have warned that New York City has failed to keep pace with the threats posed by sea-level rise along the 520-mile coastline of the city?s five boroughs. Builders that have taken steps on their own, like Sims Metal, have been relatively few.

But as city officials and real estate developers ponder a landscape of devastation from the South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan to the Rockaways in Queens to Midland Beach on Staten Island, new flood protections for all building types suddenly seem inevitable, whether voluntary or mandated by new laws.

?Now there?s a different calculus,? the City Council speaker, Christine C. Quinn, said. ?You pay now or you pay more later.?

Last week, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Ms. Quinn convened a new ?building resiliency? task force to study potential changes in the building code and to make recommendations by the summer. Ms. Quinn said she anticipated that the city would require retrofits to reinforce existing structures and more floodproofing for new projects.

The chairman of the task force, Russell Unger, is executive director of the Urban Green Council, which advises the city on sustainable building issues. He said the new group would need to address both direct impacts from the storm, like structure collapse and flooding, and secondary ones, like power losses from utility failures. Levels of protection will have to vary according to location, building use and other variables, he said.

Speaking of the different expectations for different buildings, for example, Mr. Unger said, ?we probably expect elevators at senior centers to work, no matter what happens.?

Some of the potential measures are relatively simple, like keeping sandbags handy and installing floodgates at building entrances. Others are more complicated, like relocating critical equipment like boilers above ground level or encasing them in watertight enclosures and rebuilding houses on concrete piles.

The storm?s aftermath also revealed a need for emergency generators to run at least one elevator in tall residential buildings and to pump water to high floors so the buildings remain habitable after a severe storm, some owners said.

Yet some builders say they have every incentive not to wait for government mandates and have taken some steps on their own.

At Queens West, the sprawling multiuse riverfront complex in Long Island City, Queens, the developer TF Cornerstone built higher over fill, eliminated basements, installed mechanical systems on the first and second floors and added floodgates at the entrances of five residential buildings, said Jon McMillan, the firm?s director of planning. He said the firm was acting on advice from Architectonica, a Miami firm that is familiar with the ravages of hurricanes.

During Hurricane Sandy, Mr. McMillan said, the water did not reach the lobby doors of the five buildings, which are all occupied, so the protections were not tested.

Still, such provisions might have made a big difference at another TF Cornerstone property, the 52-story luxury high-rise at 2 Gold Street in Lower Manhattan, he said. The flooding there knocked out the building?s electrical and mechanical systems, and residents of its 850 apartments have been told they cannot return home until March because the equipment, which corrodes with saltwater, has to be reordered and built.

?This is in the center of Lower Manhattan on the East Side, so we were not thinking about sea-level rise,? Mr. McMillan said of the building, completed in 2005.

TF Cornerstone is now planning to create watertight, submarine-like enclosures for the electrical room and other equipment at 2 Gold, he said. And the firm is considering placing all mechanical equipment above ground in a new Midtown project it envisions building on the Hudson.

Some in the real estate industry predict a new appeal for midrise buildings. Thomas Guss, a broker who caters to an international wealthy clientele, said interest in smaller luxury residential buildings like the 19-floor Centurion, a condominium at 33 West 56th Street designed by I. M. Pei, had doubled since the storm. He said potential buyers had told him they feared being trapped in their apartments with no lights or water, or having to climb 50 flights of stairs.

?Suddenly, people who wanted the 50th floor now want the 15th,? he said. ?People realize that when there?s no elevator, maybe the view is not as magical anymore.?

Some developers worry about losing rentable space above ground to mechanical equipment. Others are reluctant to forgo the aesthetics of ground-floor luxury retail stores. Still, that lesson has been well absorbed in flood-prone areas of New Orleans and Hamburg, Germany, where homes have been rebuilt on stilts and waterfronts raised.

Some architects and building experts say the city should widen its efforts to plant more wetlands and parks that can serve as natural buffers to floods. ?All the little blades of grass actually makes the flow of the water lower,? said Susannah C. Drake, associate director of the Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design and the principal architect at dlandstudio.

What does not seem to be getting consideration, at least for now, is banning development altogether in the city?s flood zones, humble or affluent.

?This is not a viable policy option in New York City, and to be honest, nor is it in any other major coastal city I?ve been working,? said Jeroen Aerts, a water risk expert from the Free University in Amsterdam who has been hired by the mayor?s office to assess flood protections. ?The stakes of developers and general economic activities in the waterfront are too high.?

In Mr. Aerts?s view, the most realistic options for New York are to build levees and surge barriers, and elevate and floodproof buildings.

Ms. Quinn, a likely candidate for mayor when Mr. Bloomberg?s term expires at the end of 2013, said changes in the building code were a far higher priority than rethinking zoning rules. But she said that nothing was off the table.

?I don?t think there?s anything that?s taboo to discuss at this point,? she said.

New Journey Series ? When prudence meets a desperate dream ...

Over the past days to months, my struggle to become financially independent has been a dilemma that never left my mind.? This has been causing me worries and occasional anxiety attacks. Will I be able to pay my bills for the next three years? Will I have more freelance jobs and writing assignments? No matter how good are my plans and intentions, there are just some things that happen way beyond my control. Sigh..

In my attempt to remain?loyal with my much needed mission to be accomplished, I was monitoring my expenses and exerting all means to beat the temptation to spend. The only thing I can be proud of myself now is that I no longer use my credit cards for my purchases. When I want a new blouse or a pair of shoes, I pay everything in cash. My only purchases made through credit cards include the replacement for our 20+ years old refrigerator and my phone that was begging for eternal rest. LOL? The cards were used as substitute and not as an extender to my purchasing capacity.

A week ago, I did some decluttering in my room and guess what happened? I was able to almost complete my Christmas list. It?s only now that I discovered that I hoarded a lot of things within a span of a year. I shopped for goods which I thought would be useful.? I obviously accumulated things that consumed space and ripped a huge whole in my pocket.

As much as I want to show the proof of my shopaholic attacks, I prefer to keep them because some of my friends might accidentally land on this post. My Christmas presents will be busted then.? Haha? For those who are raising their eye brows and wanted to call me selfish, go on! One thing I can assure? is that all my presents are NEW and never been used. I can still draw the dividing line?of my?prudence?vs. deceit and?selfishness?.

All the while, I thought that I will be spared from purchasing gifts for everyone. I thought I?m almost done with my Christmas list. Almost not until someone invited me to join their Kris Kringle. Just when I?m teaching and disciplining myself to limit my expenses, I have to spend more for these three-times-a-week-gift-giving.? Call me The Grinch but I never loved the idea of buying gifts that would just end up as useless pieces at home, as a result of complying with those ?something?? ?something? requirement. I?d rather spend and lavish?gifts the people close to my heart or share a fraction of my much awaited 13th month pay to organizations that awaken that soft spot in my heart.

Another?reason why?I never loved with this weekly gift giving?marathon is the minimum amount requirement.? (Tag me now as a killed joy and pathetic loser. ) We were asked to purchased something not lower than? Php 30. Cheap but do that 3 to 5 times a week, that?s already a significant amount of money. Added to it the fact that I won?t settle with the idea of buying a gift for the sake of compliance. Since it?s a gift, I might as well make it as a real gift.

Since I don?t want to bother and accummulate additional worries to my overloaded system, I went to the mall two days ago to fulfill my Kris Kringle list. So here?s what happened.

I?m finally done and almost happy not until I checked my receipts.?I would like to believe?that I?surpassed the requirement of not becoming an annoying gift giver. I bought useful gifts but when I did the Math, I failed! You see, this is a shouting evidence that I?m never good in budget execution.

As I?m trying to convince myself that I?ll just call it a day, I remembered something that I should have purchased. Gift wrappers!!! No, I wouldn?t want to spend again so I?allowed the ambitious and pretentious Martha Stewart in me to handle things. LOL

I checked my?cabinet that housed my shopping bags (another proof of my shopaholic attacks) and?I did some?desperate?DIY moves.

Redundantly desperate!

How I wish I was blessed with just a drop of the talent of? Martha Stewart or the famous Papemelroti?s Alejandro family.? I never knew that creativity can go a long way. Aside from the fact that DIY projects can save some money, it could even turn to some business opportunities? if taken seriously.? Now that I?m taking DIY seriously, the more important question is

Will DIY take me seriously too?? LOL

This year's Black Friday shoppers were split into two distinct groups: those who wanted to fall into a turkey-induced slumber and those who'd rather shop instead.

Stores typically open in the wee hours of the morning on the day after Thanksgiving that's named Black Friday because it's traditionally when retailers turn a profit for the year. But after testing how shoppers would respond to earlier hours last year, stores such as Target and Toys R Us this year opened as early as Thanksgiving evening. That led shoppers on a mission to find the best Black Friday deals to ask a difficult question: Deal with the crowds now or later?

Crystal Camacho, 19, and Sammy Caban, 23, got to Best Buy in the Manhattan borough of New York City at 12:30 a.m. on Black Friday with one goal in mind, a 40-inch Toshiba TV on sale for $180. They were determined, even though they both worked on Thanksgiving Day and had to work on Black Friday, she as a restaurant hostess and he as salesperson at GameStop. Five hours later, a little after 5 a.m., they walked out with the TV.

"It was crazy but well worth it," Caban said. "We got lucky."

Elizabeth Garcia, a sales rep from the city's Bronx borough, decided for a later shopping started at about 3:30 a.m. at a nearby Toys R Us in New York's Times Square. Garcia, who has three children ages three, five and seven, said she specifically decided on the later time to avoid the crowds on Thanksgiving when the store opened at 8 p.m. She believes that was the best decision: Last year, Garcia almost got into a fight over a Tinker Bell couch, but this year things were much calmer.

"This year I wasn't about to kill people," she said.

It is unclear how many shoppers were drawn to the earlier openings versus the traditional Black Friday hours. But according to an International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs survey of 1,000 consumers conducted this month, about 17 percent planned to shop at stores that opened on Thanksgiving, up from 16 percent last year when retailers were testing the earlier hours. Meanwhile, 33 percent intended to shop on Black Friday, down one percentage point from last year. Overall, it's estimated that sales on Black Friday will be up 3.8 percent to $11.4 billion this year.

The earlier hours are an effort by stores to make shopping as convenient as possible for Americans, who they fear won't spend freely during the two-month holiday season in November and December because of economic uncertainty. Many shoppers are worried about high unemployment and a package of tax increases and spending cuts known as the "fiscal cliff" that will take effect in January unless Congress passes a budget deal by then. At the same time, Americans have grown more comfortable shopping on websites that offer cheap prices and the convenience of being able to buy something from smartphones, laptops and tablet computers from just about anywhere.

That's put added pressure on brick-and-mortar stores, which can make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue during the holiday shopping season, to give consumers a compelling reason to leave their homes. That's becoming more difficult: the National Retail Federation, an industry trade group, estimates that overall sales in November and December will rise 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion, or about flat with last year's growth. But the online part of that is expected to rise 15 percent to $68.4 billion, according to Forrester Research.

As a result, brick-and-mortar retailers have been trying everything they can to lure consumers into stores. Some stores tested the earlier hours last year, but this year more retailers opened their doors late on Thanksgiving or at midnight on Black Friday. In addition to expanding their hours, many also are offering free layaways and shipping, matching the cheaper prices of online rivals and updating their mobile shopping apps with more information.

"Every retailer wants to beat everyone else," said C. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group, a research firm based in Charleston, S.C. "Shoppers love it."

Indeed, some holiday shoppers seemed to find stores' earlier hours appealing. About 11,000 shoppers were in lines wrapped around Macy's flagship store in New York City's Herald Square when it opened at midnight on Black Friday. Joan Riedewald, a private aide for the elderly, and her four children ages six to 18, where among them. By the time they showed up at the department store, Riedewalde had already spent about $100 at Toys R Us, which opened at 8 p.m., and planned to spend another $500 at Macy's before heading to Old Navy.

"I only shop for sales," she said.

Carey Maguire, 33, and her sister Caitlyn Maguire, 21, showed up at the same Target about two hours before it opened. Their goal was to buy several Nook tablet computers, which were on sale for $49. But while waiting in line they were also using their iPhone to do some online buying at rival stores.

"If you're going to spend, I want to make it worth it," said Caitlyn Maguire, a college student.

By the afternoon on Thanksgiving, there were 11 shoppers in a four-tent encampment outside a Best Buy store near Ann Arbor, Mich., that opened at midnight. The purpose of their wait? A $179 40-inch Toshiba LCD television is worth missing Thanksgiving dinner at home.

Jackie Berg, 26, of Ann Arbor, arrived first with her stepson and a friend Wednesday afternoon, seeking three of the televisions. The deal makes the TVs $240 less than their normal price, so Berg says that she'll save more than $700.

"We'll miss the actual being there with family, but we'll have the rest of the weekend for that," she said.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? A new report from the Food Bank for New York City found a quarter of the city?s food pantries and soup kitchens have closed since the recession began in 2007.

The dwindling supply is coupled with greater demand for free meals, also due to the recession, according to the non-profit organization.

?We have lost almost 250 food pantries and soup kitchens, again, at a time when need really remains high,? Triada Stampas with the Food Bank for New York City told WCBS 880.

WEB EXTRA: Read The Full Report (.pdf)

The data was compiled before superstorm Sandy struck, which caused a surge in demand for food banks. The organization said the natural disaster illustrates the need for food relief in disasters.

?We?ve seen that food shortages are more commonplace and occur more broadly in our network and when people are turned away from a food pantry or a soup kitchen, it is most commonly due to a lack of food,? Stampas told WCBS 880.

The anti-hunger group?s report called for greater investment in the emergency food provider network.

Trademark Registration In Different Cities Of India

A trademark is a symbol of individuality or unique identification. It is a distinctive sign used by an individual or any business organization or other legal entities. A trademark is used by many entities to distinguish itself or its products and services from others and identify it as a unique souce. A trademark can be an image, a name, design, word, symbol, phrase, logo or even a combination of all these elements. A trademark may also fall under standard categories based on smell, sound and color. These types of trademarks are known as conventional trademarks.

A trademark should not be copied or misused; irrespective of the fact that the owner of a trademark may take legal actions against the one indulged in any such action for trademark infringement. Any unauthorized use of trademark may hold an offender or infringer responsible before the court of law. And for availing such exclusive rights by a trademark owner, trademark registration is a must. In most countries trademark registration is a formal procedure as a precondition for pursuing this type of action. Countries like USA and Canada adapt to common law trademark rights. A common law protection right ensures to protect a trademark which is in use but not actually registered. However, such types of rights do not offer as much legal protection as registered trademarks.

Trademarks can also be registered globally which is also known as International Trademark Registration. It is one of the most important processes of registration which protects the trademark throughout the world. Not only it establishes a presumptive right of the trademark owner to use the trademark, but also it establishes jurisdiction to file a trademark infringement action at plaintiff???s place of business. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) provides a mechanism for obtaining trademark protection in many countries around the world. An applicant can obtain an international trademark registration in his or her home jurisdiction.

Issue over violation of trademark rights happens often. In such cases, certain procedures have to be followed or adhered to. Trademark litigation helps in such procedures; involves disputes over, whether the distinctive configuration of a product or anything related to the product has been infringed. The main objective of trademark litigation is to provide procedural and evidentiary advice regarding trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Alike the Trademark Act, there is Patent Act as well, which safeguards the inventions of any inventor. Any invention is the property of an inventor. Now the question arises on how an inventor does find out whether his invention is unique or not. Patent searches help any inventor to confirm that his or her invention doesn???t infringe with any other earlier patented invention. Patent searches are done by many consulting agencies. These agencies help the inventors to do such search and also give consolidated result to the inventor.

One can actually save time and money with the patent search. Usually, the Patent & Trademark Department takes three years to give its decision whether to approve the patent grant or to reject the patent application. For which an expert search is necessary with the help of patent attorney. Patent Attorneys are experienced highly qualified and professional law experts, under guidance and advice of whom one can register a patent successfully.

Indiatm is comprised of an experienced team of professionals. We assists clients in patent searches , trademark monitoring, trademark law in india , patent filing, trademark litigation, and trademark registrations.

Business School Admissions Blog | MBA Admission Blog | Blog ...

As a general rule, ?etc.? should never appear in the text of your MBA application essays. Consider the following sentences:

1.?I helped draft prospectuses, analyze key company data, value companies, etc.
2.?I look forward to courses such as ?Small Business Management,? ?Leading Teams,? ?Multiparty Negotiations,? etc.

In the first example, ?etc.? replaces information that the reader values. The reader cannot make the leap and understand where the writer?s experiences lead. In the second example, ?etc.? trivializes the school?s resources and may even suggest to the admissions committee that the applicant is just too lazy (or disinterested!) to do his/her homework.

We are at a loss to think of one instance in which ?etc.? could be used appropriately in a business school essay. In short, ensure that your essays do not include this term.

Airline SAS's survival talks with unions extended into Monday

COPENHAGEN/STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Troubled Scandinavian airline SAS and its labor unions on Monday pushed on with talks aimed at ensuring the group's survival and avoiding bankruptcy after a midnight deadline for a deal passed.

The Scandinavian airline, hit by competition from lower-price rivals, last week announced plans to cut some salaries by up to 17 percent, reduce overall headcount to about 9,000 from 15,000 and reduce costs.

The airline, half-owned by the governments of Sweden, Denmark and Norway, had said a deal with unions on wage cuts, changes to work hours and pensions must be reached by Sunday.

But talks, which began on Thursday, carried on at the main airport in Danish capital Copenhagen after the midnight deadline passed.

"What we can say is that we are still in intense negotiations," said SAS spokeswoman Elisabeth Manzi, who is based in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.

"We can't say right now how long we will be in these negotiations ... Our hope is, of course, that we will reach these agreements and that we fly as usual," she added.

At Copenhagen's airport, negotiators could be seen shuttling in and out of company headquarters for food and drink while the lights blazed in several rooms on the three floors of the building.

Analysts have questioned whether the measures will anyway secure the independence of the airline in the long term as its structure was designed more to secure jobs and Nordic solidarity than generate profits.

It has long found it difficult to compete with discount carriers like Ryanair and regional rival Norwegian Air Shuttle .

SAS management has said that if the cost cuts are carried out, the airline has a sound base for the future.

A Swedish newspaper reported that SAS directors had met banks in Stockholm late on Sunday, but SAS would not confirm that report.

Increasing fears aired widely in Scandinavian media that the lack of a deal might lead to an immediate bankruptcy application, the spokeswoman said the airline had told crews to ensure airplanes were fully fueled so as to be able to return home if necessary.

The airline was also giving cash to flying staff to ensure they could get access to hotels if there was a bankruptcy.

"Due to the fact that this is a very serious situation for SAS right now it is our responsibility as a company and employer to secure our assets, regarding staff as well as planes," Manzi said.

However, she declined to say how long SAS's cash would last if the loans with the banks were not agreed to.

The labor unions said they met all of the airline's demands.

"We have compromised with SAS on all parameters - wages, pensions and productivity," Lars Bjorking, chairman of the Danish Pilots Union, said in a statement on behalf of the Danish, Swedish and Norwegian pilots' unions.

The governments and six banks have said they will lend SAS about 3.5 billion Swedish crowns ($515 million) if the airline can secure a deal with the unions to slash costs.

SAS expects cost cuts to improve earnings by 3 billion crowns while asset sales would strengthen the company's balance sheet another by 3 billion crowns.

A Decade Later, Stern's NBA In Europe Agenda Is Growing Old Very Fast

David Stern's name will forever be linked to the NBA expanding to Europe, but as he prepares for retirement in 2014 the agenda falls to Adam Silver to get the job done. Will Silver speed up the process of establishing an NBA division in Europe, or will Stern continue to champion the cause with a fixed deadline in place?

David Stern has a date set for his retirement, but when it comes to a concrete time-table for the NBA expanding to Europe you might as well throw the calendar out with the commissioner.

If the NBA ever goes all-in on taking the game to Europe by eventually creating a "European Division", that global accomplishment will come under Adam Silver's guidance and hopefully with a more substantial end date in mind. Believe it or not, that has been the plan over the last few years, for Silver to get the job done. Sure, Stern will forever be applauded for pushing the overseas agenda but Silver will be the one to actually receive the standing ovation if we reach the point where we're discussing how Berlin's starting five are going to defend Paris' pick-and-roll as they battle in the five-team "European Division."

The key word here is "if", not "when."

Over the last nine years Stern has both implemented and recited his 10-year plan when fielding questions regarding the NBA establishing a playing presence in Europe and in the process sucked the minutes and years out of the deadline that once appeared so close, but in reality is so very far away.

Today's 10-year plan has been a 10-year plan since 2003.

It might as well be called a 20 or 25-year plan once you consider all of the factors involved in exporting the game and importing a successful model for NBA basketball in Europe.

Earlier this week at Beyond Sport United - "a gathering of global team, league and industry executives...that focuses on social responsibility" - Stern once again discussed the vision and realities the NBA faces in expanding the game overseas, but there is one comment in particular that should raise some eyebrows.

"I think for us the thing that would make the most sense would be a division in Europe at the time that it comes," Stern said. "I don't see that for another decade at least. Not one team.

"It's not something we've done a lot of looking at, but it's something that we've had people approach us with," Stern said. "We obviously keep pretty close tabs on how our attendance is in our overseas games, what the pricing structure is, what the fan affinity is, what the television arrangements are, what the ratings are, all of the metrics of the business in a place or places. It's a pretty sophisticated enterprise."

Hold up.

There is no doubt this is a delicate and sophisticated endeavor. No one is disputing that, especially knowing Stern can control a lot of elements in the business of basketball, but one of the factors out of his control is solving the downtrodden global economy the world is facing. That creates a whole different obstacle for the NBA to overcome by expanding overseas. But while the canned answer of "another decade" in regards to the NBA in Europe is in line with Stern's message dating back for years now, are we really supposed to buy European expansion is something Stern and the league have not "done a lot of looking at"?

Can we all agree no one is hearing that noise?

The league has looked at taking the game international and placing franchises across Europe long before the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks faced Euroleague teams Alba Berlin, EA7 Emporio Armani, and Fenerbahce Ulker back in October as part of the NBA Europe Live 2012. The Euroleague and NBA have partnered together since 2006 in order to not only increase exposure between the two leagues, but also to grow the partnership to a point where they can honeymoon on the hardwood all across Europe. Because if Stern, Silver and the NBA are seriously committed to establishing a "European Division" at some point in the future, the Euroleague will factor in some how, some way.

Strategically playing games in Berlin, Istanbul and Milan was simply part of a bigger plan.

The stats to keep in mind from the NBA: over 450,000 fans have attended 32 Europe Live games in 12 European cities since the inaugural NBA Europe Live series launched back in 2006. In total, 25 NBA teams have played 60 games in 18 cities around Europe since 1988.

Granted, these games in the late summer and early fall are designed for week-long events and not an 82-game regular season, a small model is in place and shown to be successful. The problem is the idea becomes more diluted when you sprinkle in arranging the venues, mix in the broadcasting rights, add some ticket sales and the fan friendly promotions.

It's a fine line between delicious and leaving a bad after-taste.

"It's not the schedule and the traveling which is the problem. It's the arenas, the ownership, the television arrangements, the pricing structure and the fan avidity," Stern said last February.

"And it doesn't pay to take anything for granted. It's a nice thought. But basketball is not going to vend in Europe quite yet. It's just growing. And it's growing slowly but it's growing nevertheless."

When Stern steps away from the NBA on Feb. 1, 2014 and enters retirement he will leave behind an impressive legacy in the game over the last 30-plus years. But you have to believe that Stern - despite his never-ending "10-year plan" - will continue to champion the cause of overseas expansion long after he's turned the controls over to Silver. Back in 2003, Stern said the league would start to investigate placing teams in Europe within a decade, but that agenda was suddenly pushed to the back burner when the NBA switched the focus to developing their relationship with China.

It worked.

So why not Europe?

"It (European expansion) is something I plan to bequeath to my successor," Stern joked back in 2009.

The punchline grows less funny the further the NBA distances itself from going global.

Maybe instead of picking-up golf as a retirement hobby or doing speaking engagements, Stern will keep his focus aimed solely on expanding the game to Europe and won't stop until London and Moscow are playing for the division title in another 10-years.

Better make it 20.

UK wants details before recognising Syria opposition

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain would like to formally recognise the Syrian opposition's fledgling coalition but needs to know more about its plans first, Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Friday.

The group was formed in Doha at the weekend in an attempt to unify the fractious movement trying to topple Bashar al-Assad and secure international recognition and arms.

Members of the coalition, including its leader Mouaz Alkhatib, are due to meet Hague and other Western officials in London on Friday before heading to Paris on Saturday.

France became the first European power to recognise the new body on Tuesday but other Western states are holding back, uneasy over the presence of radical Islamists among the rebels and accusations by U.N. investigators of war crimes committed by rebel fighters.

"We would like to be able at an early stage to recognise them as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people," Hague told reporters. "We need their assurances about being inclusive of all communities."

He urged the coalition to set out a credible plan for political transition and widen its support among the Syrian people as conditions for official British recognition.

Hague said the appointment of a vice president and showing a clear commitment to human rights were also urgent priorities.

The conflict in Syria, triggered by the Arab Spring-inspired uprising against Assad in March last year, has taken on an increasingly sectarian tone, and Syria's minorities fear the rise of the mainly Sunni Muslim opposition.

Alkhatib is a moderate Sunni Muslim cleric.

Sunni Muslims are the majority in Syria, while Assad is a member of the Alawite minority, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam. Syria's other minorities have had a measure of protection under Assad's largely secular, autocratic rule.

ARM THE REBELS?

An estimated 38,000 people have been killed since the uprising began. Stalled efforts to stem the violence have received a renewed push since the re-election of U.S. President Barack Obama earlier this month.

The French foreign minister said on Thursday that France would in the coming weeks discuss whether to supply arms to Syrian opposition forces, and Hague said on Friday that Britain does not "rule out any option" in handling the crisis.

However, he appeared to play down the prospects of supplying military aid, at least in the near future.

"We are conscious that this ultimately needs, whatever happens, it needs a diplomatic and political solution. A military victory of one side over the other would be a long, expensive process in terms of human life," Hague said.

He said Britain's National Security Council, which met on Thursday, had discussed giving military aid to the Syrian opposition, but that Britain had not changed its position and would continue to supply only non-lethal assistance.

Hague said he might be able to make a decision on whether to recognise the Syrian coalition "in the coming days" and that he would make a statement to parliament on the issue next week.

European foreign and defence ministers are expected to meet on Monday to discuss Syria.

The Power Of Interactive Learning That Can Change The World

A form of knowledge enhancement that is commonly used on the Internet is known as collaborative learning. One individual can team up with another and share information and skills, so that both can learn from each other through forums, discussion boards and chats. This is an important part of learnng, as teamwork is also based on the same principle.

When ideas are shared, each individual contributes in his or her own unique way. The outcomes of the discussion can be evaluated through a learning management software, and accordingly feedback can be provided to the learner. If this feedback is given to a large number of individuals who interact through the online medium, this is known as social learning. This provides different perspectives towards a common problem, that helps to broaden the spectrum of thinking.

Through the exchange of various views and ideas, individuals learn different approaches to handling a particular work situation, and this acts as a confidence booster for them. Learning is a never-ending process, and this can be clearly seen when e-learning solutions are used. However, care must be taken to purchase these solutions from an experienced vendor, so that glitches do not appear during installation.

An e-learning solution can also be integrated with a social media platform, such as Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, and it can be used by the users to communicate with each other in real time. This way, no data has to be downloaded on computer systems or mobile phones, and information can be provided directly over the Internet. This can be considered as a form of interactive learning. Additionally, this also makes the whole process of knowledge enhancement into a fun and engaging process.

Outsourcing training requirements to a recognized e-learning company is very cost-effective for any business. The various e-learning companies have many trained individuals who are already working to develop solutions. These solutions can also be easily upgraded from time to time, to include new databases of knowledge.

There are many individuals who get together in order to create a particular training module. This includes instructional designers, subject matter experts and translators, to name a few. The product is also developed based on the mode of delivery (computer based, web based, instructor training).

Today, a new form of knowledge enhancement known as game-based learning, has also been included. Through various educational games, different real world strategies can be understood by employees. This is also another form of interactive learning, where individuals compete against each other.

Gireesh Sharma is an author writing on Human Resource Management. His expertise includes Interactive learning, social learning and other Learning & Development matters such as collaborative learning.

Inactivity Is Killing Us

Inactivity: a weapon of mass destruction

Inactivity is killing us. Where sometimes there is a lot of controversy in scientific articles, there is none here: inactivity is by all evidence the fourth killer in the world. Put in another way, inactivity is the cause of one in 10 deaths in the world! Research has shown that inactivity caused in 2008 as many deaths as tobacco, which means that year, 5,3 million people died because they did not move enough! Dr I-Min Lee of the Harvard Medical School in Boston links 6 to 10 % of four major killers (cardio-vascular disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer) to the fact that people are not even moderately active. Cartoonist Glasbergen got the right message but over estimated workout time in this caption: what fits better in your busy schedule? Being active one hour a day or being dead 24 hours a day? The message is even more disturbing when the right amount of time is put in: 20 minutes of moderate activity. This is all that would be needed to save the lives of 5,3 million people worldwide.

Exercise: a weapon of mass construction

There is more. Being active does not only save lives! It increases quality of lives! It has a strong favorable effect on many diseases: Alzheimer?s disease, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis and of course, obesity. We?ll cover these subjects separately in future posts. Activity has even been proven to slow aging at the chromosome level! An easy way to see this is to consider activity as the ultimate weapon of mass construction.

Four Steps to defeat inactivity

1. Commit to yourself. Your life is worth 20 minutes of your time everyday or 30 minutes 5 days a week. Remember: you are meant to be fit and healthy. Inactivity will destroy this. What you are committing is to a lifestyle change. You deserve the best!

2. Don?t be fancy! You do not need expensive gym membership or ineffective gizmos that promise you health without effort. To begin, something as simple as walking briskly everyday will put you on the right tract. The principle is simple: what you do MUST ask a little more effort to your heart, lungs and muscles than sitting in a chair? The idea is to build some reserve to help you get through life?s challenges.

3. Once you are a little more fit, and it won?t take long, you?ll be able to move on to something a little more challenging. But once again, nothing fancy! You do not need a gym membership. A home training program with some support for motivation (online support is ideal) will do.

4. Believe in yourself and believe in your success.

Ready to invest in yourself? Ready for an active lifestyle? Visit my blog at http://www.blog.fitnessmissionpossible.com, hit the ?contact me? page and tell me what type of activity you like. I?ll be glad to help you choose an activity you?ll love practicing day after day. Remember: you deserve it! Believe in yourself!

HTC ThunderBolt vs. the Droid DNA

HTC Droid DNA and ThunderBolt.

What a difference a year and a half makes, eh? OK, call it 20 months, maybe. Regardless, here's the brand-new Verizon Droid DNA, and the aging ThunderBolt. HTC phones, both. One represents the manufacturer's first go at an LTE device, back when the technology was new, and design (and battery life) suffered for it.  A 4.3-inch display. Mere 1400 mAh battery. And, damn, was that thing ever thick.

Now we have the Droid DNA. A 5-inch Super LCD3 display that's got 1,080 freakin' pixels on the short end. A 2020 mAh battery. And a svelte design. Basically you're looking at the difference between me and a Victoria's Secret model. (Yeah. Enjoy that image.)

Anyway. Video and pics after the break, so you get a better idea of the difference between these guys.

Have Droid DNA questions? Ask 'em in our Droid DNA forums!

Obama's grand bargain: economy first, deficit second

Any 'grand bargain' to avert the fiscal cliff should contain a starting trigger that begins spending cuts and any middle-class tax increases only when the economy is strong enough, Reich writes.

By Robert Reich,?Guest blogger / November 14, 2012

President Barack Obama steps up to the podium before a news conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington Wednesday. A strong economy should take priority over deficit reduction, Reich writes.

Charles Dharapak/AP

When he meets with Congressional leaders this Friday to begin discussions about avoiding the upcoming ?fiscal cliff,? the President should make crystal clear that America faces two big economic challenges ahead: getting the economy back on track, and getting the budget deficit under control.

Skip to next paragraph Robert Reich

Robert is chancellor?s professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley. He has served in three national administrations, most recently as secretary of labor under President Clinton. Time Magazine?named him one of the 10 most effective cabinet secretaries of the last century. He has written 13 books, including ?The Work of Nations,? his latest best-seller ?Aftershock: The Next Economy and America?s Future," and a new?e-book, ?Beyond Outrage.??He is also a founding editor of the American Prospect magazine and chairman of Common Cause.

But the two require opposite strategies. We get the economy back on track by boosting demand through low taxes on the middle class and more government spending. We get the budget deficit under control by raising taxes and reducing government spending. (Taxes can be raised on the wealthy in the short term without harming the economy because the wealthy already spend as much as they want ? that?s what it means to be rich.)

It all boils down to timing and sequencing: First, get the economy back on track. Then tackle the budget deficit.?
