Kaiser Permanente to Host the 2012 NHCC Fall Member Meeting in ...

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Hispanic Corporate Council, a non-profit organization, in partnership with corporate America since 1985, which provides its member companies a multi-layered approach and resources to maximize the diversity of the Hispanic market, will hold its 2012 Fall Member Meeting and CEO Forum, on Wednesday, Oct. 3 and Thursday, Oct. 4 in Berkeley, Calif. The focus of this two-day conference is "Developing a Healthy Business Culture: An Innovative Approach to Thriving in Today's Marketplace." Today's business environment is one of the most challenging we've faced. Beyond just the regular forecasts that businesses produce, we have interesting regulatory forecasts to produce, which could be equally impactful. However, even in the most challenging times, there are businesses that thrive and find new ways to grow. That doesn't happen by accident but because of purpose. We all want to find that purpose and nugget of inspiration and knowledge that creates the competitive edge.

Our Fall Membership Meeting has been designed to provide an opportunity to discover how to be purposeful and perhaps look at thriving in a totally different way. "Here at the NHCC we understand the needs of Corporate America and in 2012 we will continue to provide the educational resources needed to help our membership meet the challenges in an ever changing business environment. We ask our membership to take full advantage of the resources we offer; attend transformational member conferences that have been reformatted to provide a deep dive into subject matter across key responsibility areas to help managers, directors and executives continue to be prolific in business." said Pat Martinez, President & Chief Executive Officer. "This fall we will have concurrent tracks in Wellness as a Business Strategy and Social Media. We also have incorporated a Leadership Development Session customized for our membership attending the conference in conjunction with our CEO Forum.? We added additional value at the conference by incorporating an informal recruiting session with entry level Hispanic professionals from local universities and high schools that is sponsored by Walmart and serves to add another vital component to our goal of pipeline Hispanic talent development. We hold a unique space in leadership development and we continue to provide our membership with the resources and best practices they need to learn and drive their companies successfully."

Track 1 of our member meeting event will include a focus on maintaining a healthy workforce "Wellness as a Business Strategy" Presentation. Edgar Quiroz, National Director of Workforce Diversity, Kaiser Permanente, will moderate this session. Guest speaker is Dr. Frank Meza, Assistant Area Medical Director, Los Angeles and West Los Angeles Medical Centers. The panelists are: Jill Berger, Vice-President, Health & Welfare, Marriott International; Warren J. Moore, Divisional Health and Wellness Senior Director, Walmart; and Pamela French, Director, Global Benefits and Integration in Human Resources, Boeing. Lost productivity. High absenteeism. Low morale. These are the costs of overlooking the importance of inspiring the workforce to be physically, mentally and emotionally present in the workplace. In today's fiercely competitive environment and economy, organizations simply cannot afford to ignore the risk of expensive and increasing health care costs due to health care issues caused by an epidemic of inactivity. This track will explore the total bottom line impact of an unhealthy workforce.

Track 2 will include panel expert that will share their stories on successful best practices as it relates to social media.? The objective of the Social Media session will be to provide the participants insight into the impact social media has on business and communications. Technology has greatly impacted how organizations communicate with not only their consumers but also their employees.? A social shift in Internal and External Communications is taking place and now a significant number of Social Media platforms are redefining how small and large organizations can improve productivity and develop effective corporate communications. Experts and representatives from leading organizations will share case studies and presentations about how Social Media is changing the way "we do business" and communicate.? We will look at challenges and opportunities, time and resources required, and the results that can be achieved. Please join us in welcoming Manny Santos, Director of the Hispanic Division, MultiVu ? A PR Newswire Company, who will be the moderator for the session. The presenters for session 1 are: Michael Pranikoff, Global Director ? Emerging Media, PR Newswire; Holly Potter, Vice President of Brand Communication Kaiser Permanente and Jessica Lagala, Digital Strategist, TMP. Session 2 panelists are: Alejandro Hernandez, Senior Vice President, Wells Fargo; Catherine Hernandez, Vice President of Brand Communication, Kaiser Permanente; Michael Pranikoff, Global Director ? NHCC will also be partnering with universities, colleges and this year with two high schools in the area to connect students from the different participating institutions to network, learn from each other, get to know professional Latino leaders and their professional experience, hear testimonials and share insights.?? Energizing and building the future pipeline of Latino leaders is a commitment that should come from our entire society.? Just because Latinos are the fastest growing minority in the United States does not mean Latinos are the only one to build that pipeline.??It is the tradition and commitment of NHCC and its member organizations to join together in providing an interactive forum to inspire and encourage young Latinos to accomplish their goals.

The NHCC CEO Forum, "Conversations in the C-Suite" focused on healthcare disparities will be showcased on Thursday, October 4th. Presenter: George Halvorson, CEO of Kaiser Permanente and Luke Visconti, CEO DiversityInc will lead sessions to discuss the healthcare environment and engage with NHCC members to identify key intersections between the healthcare challenge and the Hispanic/Latino world.? Not a day goes by without discussion of healthcare in the news or among leaders in the US. Closing the gap of healthcare disparities needs to be in the forefront of discussion in our society.? Industry leaders such as Kaiser Permanente are working to address the ways they are closing the gap in healthcare. Healthcare is more than just an industry; healthcare is uniquely intertwined with economic competitiveness, political and corporate leadership, technology and innovation, education, environmental advocacy, social responsibility, national security, and much more. Our "Conversations in the C-Suite" panelist is: Tony Barrueta, SVP of Government Relations, Kaiser Permanente, Louise McDonald of Herman Miller, President of Healthcare business and David A. Martinez, MD, founder and CEO of CLICKVIEW CORPORATION.

The afternoon will highlight an Interactive Leadership Workshop by Southern Methodist University ? Cox School of Business.? Presenters: Jerry Magar, founding Director of Organizational Effectiveness with Southern Methodist University and Dr. Frank Lloyd, Associate Dean, Executive Education, will explore best practices on leading through change.? This session will explore the premise that regardless of the depth or intensity of change, we as humans react in very predictable ways.?? You'll learn why the same behaviors that may have been effective in one environment, when transferred to the dynamics of change, can be not just ineffective but downright dangerous.? You will learn specific tools to help manage productivity and minimize disruption during times of change.? Operating from the belief that change is not just a one-time shot, but a way life...these principles create the capacity for individuals and organizations to not merely survive in the challenging times of change but to thrive in them.

Reds' Bailey no-hits Pirates

Seventh no-hitter of '12 matches modern record for most in a MLB season

updated 11:36 p.m. ET Sept. 28, 2012

PITTSBURGH - Homer Bailey had a certain milestone on his mind when he walked to the mound Friday night. He wound up pulling off an even bigger feat.

Bailey pitched the seventh no-hitter in the majors this season, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The right-hander began the night with 195 innings pitched this season and was eager to reach 200 for the first time in his six-year career.

"I looked up at the scoreboard (after the fifth inning) to see if I had hit 200 and saw a couple of zeros," Bailey said. "That's when I knew I had a chance at a no-hitter. It's not something you think about doing."

It was the 15th no-hitter in Reds history and first since Tom Browning's perfect game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 16, 1988.

The seven major league no-hitters match the modern record for one season, tying 1990 and 1991. There were eight no-hitters in 1884.

"I don't think there is any reason why there have been so many," Bailey said. "There is a real fine line there in throwing a no-hitter. A bloop can fall in the outfield or an infielder can be in the wrong position and there goes your hit. You have to be extremely fortunate to throw a no-hitter and we had luck on our side tonight."

Bailey (13-10) struck out 10 and walked one. He threw 115 pitches and retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out pinch-hitter Brock Holt before getting pinch-hitter Michael McKenry and Alex Presley to pop out.

When second baseman Brandon Phillips caught Presley's popup on the outfield grass, Bailey was mobbed near the mound by happy teammates and doused with water.

The 26-year-old Bailey improved to 5-0 with a 1.19 ERA in six career starts at PNC Park. All four of his complete games and both his shutouts have come against Pittsburgh.

It was the first time the Pirates had been held hitless since Hall of Famer Bob Gibson pitched the lone no-hitter of his career in 1971 for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cincinnati, which clinched the NL Central title last Saturday, improved to 95-62. The Reds are tied with Washington for the best record in the NL.

Bailey has been touted as a future ace since Cincinnati selected him seventh overall in the 2004 amateur draft following his senior year of high school in LaGrange, Texas.

He has a 38-33 career record and has set a season high for wins. Reds bench coach Chris Speier, serving as acting manager while Dusty Baker recovers from a mini-stroke, thinks the no-hitter could serve as a benchmark moment for Bailey.

"He's always been a good thrower, but he's really learned how to pitch this season," Speier said. "You saw the evolution tonight."

The other no-hitters this season were thrown by Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox, Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels, Johan Santana of the New York Mets, Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants, Felix Hernandez of Seattle and a combined six-pitcher effort by the Mariners. Humber, Cain and Hernandez each had a perfect game.

Pittsburgh (76-81) made its own bit of history as it was assured of a 20th consecutive non-winning season with the loss, extending its major North American professional sports record.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Bailey had more than luck going for him. Hurdle sensed Bailey and catcher Ryan Hanigan were on the same page right from the first inning.

"They were spot-on with almost every pitch," Hurdle said. "He kept throwing fastball up and away and breaking balls down and in and it was just an effective combination."

It was also the first no-hitter caught by Hanigan, who broke into the majors with Bailey in 2007.

"It's very special because Homer and I have been there every step of the way," Hanigan said. "It's great for Homer, it's great for the organization and it's just great for the team because it's another special moment in what has been a very special season."

Bailey retired his first six batters before third baseman Scott Rolen booted Clint Barmes' leadoff grounder in the third inning for an error. Bailey then set down 13 straight until walking Andrew McCutchen with one out in the seventh while clinging to the one-run lead.

McCutchen stole second but then was thrown out by Hanigan attempting to steal third. Garrett Jones flied out to the warning track in right field to end the inning.

Cincinnati needed to make just one above-average defensive play behind Bailey. Left fielder Todd Frazier ran down Presley's flare toward the foul line to end the third.

With the Reds employing a defensive shift, left-handed hitter Pedro Alvarez lined out to Rolen in the eighth.

"I thought the no-hitter was gone when Alvarez hit that ball, but fortunately the shift was on," Bailey said.

A.J. Burnett (16-9) allowed seven hits in eight innings with five strikeouts and one walk.

"The way A.J. pitched, it was going to take almost nothing short of a no-hitter to beat him," Hurdle said.

The Reds scored in the first inning on Frazier's sacrifice fly after loading the bases with no outs on singles by Phillips and Zach Cozart and a walk to Joey Votto.

Phillips, Cozart and Rolen all had two hits.

The loss continued the Pirates' downhill spiral. They have gone 13-36 since moving a season-high 16 games over .500 on Aug. 8 with a 63-47 record.

NOTES: Speier said he had a telephone conversation with Baker, who has missed the last nine games. Speier said the veteran manager "is feeling very, very good and looking forward to getting back." Baker is scheduled to rejoin the Reds on Monday night when they open a three-game series at St. Louis to end the regular season. ... Pittsburgh 2B Neil Walker will miss the rest of the season because of lower back soreness that has limited him to eight games in September. ... Reds LF Ryan Ludwick, who has missed eight straight games with tightness in his left groin, is expected to return to the lineup Sunday. ... Cincinnati RHP Mike Leake (8-9, 4.73 ERA) will face Pittsburgh RHP Kyle McPherson (0-2, 3.54) on Saturday night.

How-To-Beat MERS After Arizona Homeowners Lose Foreclosure ...

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had really no choice but to reject the weak argument presented by Arizona homeowners in their foreclosure case. The homeowners argued that they were misinformed about the operations of how MERS worked. In other words they somewhat relied on the misinformation and suffered injury as a result. Calling MERS a SHAM! Which the homeowners also felt prevented them from contacting the party holding the loan to get a loan modification repayment plan.

Find investment properties at Real Estate Matchmaker

In a letter from Judge Conseulo Callahan writing from the unanimous three-judge panel, said that ?Mortgage Electronic Registration System is a legitimate way for lenders to store deeds when the loans are transferred from one lender to another.?

This is where Improper Mortgage Securitization comes into play. Why every homeowner facing foreclosure, foreclosure defense lawyers, and forensic loan auditors need to understand when securitization is flawed. Most importantly those trying to stop or void foreclosure need to know how to explain when improper mortgage securitization exists!

The problem with MERS is that while they are setup to store deeds when loans are transferred from one lender to another which is legitimate but if securitization is improper the holder receiving transfer is NOT a Holder In Due Course. Now it becomes a universal problem for MERS because this is a violation of Uniform Commercial Code.

This is where MERS will die when using the Improper Mortgage Securitization foreclosure defense. So MERS acts as an nominee, a separate entity to store the deeds being transferred? This answer to this question is yes. Okay, it is a legitimate business model! But what authority is expressly given in the NOTE that grants MERS permission to transfer the NOTE with the deed?!! The Arizona homeowners Did NOT argue this important foreclosure defense and would prove improper mortgage securitization exists! Why? I have YET to see one note that grants MERS such authority. Believe me I have inspected thousands of mortgage notes including my own.

Consider This:

?Even if we were to accept the plaintiffs? premises that MERS is a sham beneficiary and the note is split from the deed, we would reject the plaintiffs? conclusion that, as a necessary consequence, no party has the power to foreclose,? Callahan wrote. She said such a claim could succeed only where MERS initiated foreclosure in its own name, or where the designation of MERS violates state recording and foreclosure statutes, neither of which is at issue here.

This is silly on behalf of the Arizona homeowners because essentially a loan was originated and somewhere somebody is owed! This prime example of wearing a t-shirt that says ?Give Me A FREE House Please I Am A Deadbeat?.

For MERS this gets even more complicated because certainly there are thousands of homes that were foreclosed in MERS name and listed as the lender in the legal paper. That class action coming SOON is to be continued, let?s just hope those homeowners have good legal representation that know what Improper Mortgage Securitization is and HOW to explain it.

Could the Arizona homeowners have won against MERS? If they argued the foreclosure defense of Improper Mortgage Securitization they could have easily won. After all contracts such as a mortgage NOTE is governed by Uniform Commercial Code. Another killer for MERS is fabrication of mortgage assignment transfers and the use of Robo signers. Every mortgage assignment must be fact checked by the assignor! Was it ever examined did MERS violate state recording and foreclosure statutes? There are too many things wrong with why the Arizona homeowners were defeated by MERS.

Your Online Business Can Be A Real Success | The Board Magazine

Everyone has considered the benefits of starting a home based business. Running your own home based business allows you flexibility other jobs don?t have. Implementing this into a plan is a bit tricky, but this article can help you.

You should find out where you can locate your target audience in your local area and find ways to market directly to them. While there are plenty of potential customers on the Internet, don?t neglect the possibility of cultivating clients face-to-face. You can set up a presence at a local event or even start your own ?pop-up shop? in an area where your customers normally hang out.

TIP! No matter what guaranteed business program you use, you will not become an overnight success. Every successful home business takes time to build.

You should consider joining an web-based online business assembly. Doing this will give you the opportunity to chat with other people in your position. You can compare ideas and suggestions with other people who are working from home.

Select a home-based business objective. Don?t make it too long, but do succinctly state why your business exists and what it can do for your customers. If someone asks you what your business is all about, you?ll have an answer ready for them! This will help you sound confident when you are talking about your company, and this confidence will be apparent to your customers.

TIP! Setting regular work hours for yourself and following them will help you maintain a good work/home life balance. Set a specific time after which you will no longer accept business calls.

Removable storage devices such as portable hard drives should be used to back up the computer you use for your business. Not protecting your documents could potentially cost you enormous expenses in your business which will hinder paying your taxes properly. You could also use an online backup solution such as Mozy.

Loans for home-based businesses are typically an ill-advised move. Do you really to place the relationship on the line? Losing your house could be a possibility if you use it as collateral.

TIP! Attaining a high level of success with your home business requires the acumen to recognize unique opportunities and the courage to make the most of them. Experimenting with new things is something that you can do to attract people to your company, which can lead to high amounts of profit.

If you have decided to start a business at home, it is extremely important that your family and significant others buy into your plan. Running a business from home can be difficult and stressful, because it requires a large time commitment. If your family members are not willing to help and support you, even just by giving you alone time to work, you will not be able to successfully run a online business.

Place things in your office in a way that is ergonomic. This includes the placement of things you use often like your computer. If you have to strain your body in any way, it will be uncomfortable and you may damage your body permanently. If you spend a significant time period at your desk, try investing in a better seat if you can afford it. This goes for your other computer peripherals as well. A $200 budget will get you far.

TIP! If you do not know what you want to sell or market, consider making it something you use or could use. Highlighting a need is your number one step to picking a successful product.

Decide on how much you will charge for your merchandise. Figuring the cost to produce your merchandise can help you decide what kind of profit margin you want. The standard way to determine pricing is doubling the amount each product costs you to make. This is what you should charge for wholesale. Multiply your costs by three to get a starting point for your retail price.

One of most important things for you to remember as the owner of a home business is that tax deductions are your friend. Claiming every deduction for which you qualify on your taxes can save you a sizable amount of money.

TIP! Laughter is the best medicine. Laughing will help to you stay calm, feel joy and happiness, and even give your respiratory system a boost.

Deposit your payments the first moment you can. Don?t wait around until the end of the week or month to deposit checks. The less time a check lies around, the less likely you are to lose it. Go into the bank and deposit your checks with a teller rather than using the ATM, to avoid any problems.

You will need to have a schedule of your times. To avoid burnout, write out the times you will be working and the times you will be resting. There will be occasions when you have to work at unscheduled times, but try to stick to your planned hours as closely as possible. You need to occasionally put the stress of working behind you and just relax with your family.

TIP! Always put your customers? needs first, and go out of your way to please them. Give customers free stuff when they buy your products, and let them know that you appreciate their business by thanking them for their orders.

Remember that when you work from home, it isn?t hard to lose the separation between home life and work life. You should separate your work and personal life by establishing a specific work zone, as well as setting clear work hours to leave time for your personal life.

If your business has a base of operations separate from your home, make certain you use its location for your business address, rather than a post office box. Build customer confidence by using you physical address instead of a P.O. box. This makes your business appear trustworthy, earnest and more likely to respond to their inquiries in a timely fashion.

TIP! Be sure to share the right amount of information with your customers, so that your customers are informed without being overloaded. Allow your customers to decide whether they would like to receive newsletters and information about your specials and discounts.

When starting your home business, it is important to have a website that is capable of selling your product. This is a key opportunity for you to expand your target audience and maximize sales. You can get your website done quicker if you use a pro to assist you.

TIP! If you run a home-based daycare, make sure you hire enough help to properly tend to the children. If you are lacking sufficient help, everything will be out of control.

Meticulously plan every aspect of your home business enterprise. You have the ability to change this or scrap it at any time. No matter what, a business plan is essential for keeping your business, and you, on track and focused on the goals you want your business to reach. Update your business plan periodically.

Write a business plan, even if it is one that is based out of your home. Small businesses need a good written business plan as much as larger businesses. This plan spells out what your goals are, the ways you will reach those goals and the resources you?ll need. Following a business plan helps you stay focused as your company grows.

TIP! A serious commitment to success is necessary for any home business. There are regulations that specify what kind of building an office can be located in, so keep this in mind when finding somewhere to host a business.

Make sure to have a complete understanding of the market you plan to enter. Look at the opportunity from every perspective both positive and negative so that you can make an informed choice.

Do not think you are going to get rich overnight, be realistic. Do you have a great product that will garner interest? Are you an upstanding person who values honesty?

TIP! It is very easy to get buried in your work when you live and work in the same place. Choose one place in your home to work.

A good idea for any home based business is to know your competition?s pricing schemes. Doing so will allow you to stay on the cutting edge of your particular sales market.

Have a separate bank account to use for your business. Do not use one account for your personal expenses and your business. If your business assets are separated from your personal assets, filing your business taxes will be a breeze. Your taxes are less likely to have mistakes if you are organized when you work on them.

TIP! Make sure that you make timely deposits in your bank account, shortly after you are paid. Try to deposit on a daily or weekly basis.

Create a designated space for working within your home. You need to have enough room to keep everything organized. This aids in organization, something that is key in a successful home business.

If you are attempting to decide what product you want to sell or service you want to offer, choose something that would make your life a little easier. There is a big market for products that have a practical use in people?s everyday lives by helping them solve ordinary problems. If your product can solve a particular problem, it will most likely sell very well.

TIP! When running a home business, it?s a good idea to have a peer group for support. Find other people to put on your affiliate team.

Be certain that your home-based enterprise is compatible with your family?s lifestyle. If your business is going to be a serious imposition on the lives of your family then you should reconsider your venture.

Even when you are working from home, you should take pride in your appearance. If you work at home, you may wish to work while in your jammies. Treat your home business like you would an office and dress professionally. This instills a certain discipline that is conducive to productive work.

The separate checking account you open specifically for your business will double as a financial record keeping tool. Get in the habit of sending everything to this account. Once you are organized, you have a convenient way to review your business finances at any time. It also helps to have a credit card that you use solely for business expenses.

Select a name that has real meaning. Choose a brand name that will help your customer recognize and remember your products. Attach a quirky or inspirational story to your brand. This will help build your customer loyalty and give your brand a direction.

When you no longer have inventory of a given item, be sure to inform potential buyers. It?s very upsetting to order an item and find that you won?t receive it for weeks. Let your customers know that a product is back-ordered, and provide alternative choices to your customer as well.

Online forums alongside other entrepreneurs of home based business can help you find advocates to communicate with. There are countless forums and websites dedicated to the owners of home businesses, and the information and support that can be gained there can be invaluable. You will find many sympathetic ears in these forums, and they are normally happy to provide you with their proven suggestions to help you with any issues.

Find other non-competitive home business enterprise owners and create an advertising co-op on your various websites. When your business is advertised on other business websites you increase the opportunities for people to find you. With increased Web presence, your website will also rise in rankings for search results. Develop clear advertising techniques so that people will know what your website is about before they click on a link for your site.

Speak with a business attorney before starting a work from home business. If you are going to start a home business enterprise, you need to realize that different states have different laws. If you consult with a lawyer who deals in business, you can learn the laws of your state. You need to ensure you are abiding by them.

As you can see, it will require a little bit of work and dedication to make the jump. If you can manage to pull through and stick to the plan, you will be able to accurately represent your dream in the company?s image and create something that is long-lasting and profitable over the years

Rowling launches novel to fanfare, mixed reviews

LONDON (AP) ? After months of hype and anticipation, J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults has appeared, swept into the arms of hopeful booksellers and an army of grown-up Harry Potter fans eager to find out what his creator has done next.

A gritty and darkly humorous tale of ugly realities in a pretty English village, "The Casual Vacancy" seems a long way from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and reviewers gave it a mixed reception. But Rowling said Thursday she wasn't worried about the response.

"I've had my books burnt," said the author, whose magical stories were condemned as Satanist by some Christian groups. "I've got quite a way to go to upset people that much with 'A Casual Vacancy.'"

A story of ambition, envy and rivalry, the novel recounts the civic warfare sparked in the fictional Pagford when the unexpected death of a town official leaves a vacancy on the governing body. Characters set on a collision course range from the affluent lawyer Miles Mollison to the Weedons, a ramshackle clan living in The Fields, the run-down housing project on the edge of town.

Rowling told a 1,000-strong audience at London's Southbank Centre that the idea for the book ? "Local election sabotaged by teenagers, basically" ? came to her on a plane several years ago.

Writing for a more adult readership, she said, had been "freeing" ? though "in other senses it's a challenging book," told from multiple viewpoints.

Rowling said the book's focus on teenagers, the heart of Pagford and of the novel, was not a million miles from her previous work ? although these troubled and profane youngsters are "not Harry, Ron and Hermione."

"They are very different teenagers," Rowling said. "They are contemporary teenagers."

The book's sex and swearing have drawn the most comment so far ? some audience members were startled to hear the F-word pass Rowling's lips during Thursday's reading. But the presence of death is perhaps the book's most adult element, and one that loomed over Harry Potter's world, too.

"Death obsesses me," Rowling said. "I can't understand why it doesn't obsess everyone. Think it does. I'm just a little more 'out.'"

Five years after the last Potter book appeared, Rowling remains the world's most successful living writer. The lines were shorter and the wizard costumes missing, but "The Casual Vacancy" appeared to some of the same fanfare that greeted each Potter tome, with stores wheeling out crates of the books precisely at 8 a.m. as part of a finely honed marketing strategy.

And Rowling retains the intense loyalty of Potter fans. In contrast to the tight security that preceded the book's release, the atmosphere at Thursday' reading was warm; it felt like a reunion. Several audience members asked Potter-related questions, which Rowling answered at length. One young man, wearing a "Rowling is our Queen" T-shirt, asked if her could give her a present. Rowling accepted it graciously.

Many in the crowd were young adults who had grown up on Harry Potter and we keen to follow her wherever she wanted to go.

"She's been such an inspiration to everyone," said 18-year-old university student Milly Anderson. "She's not just influenced people's childhoods ? she's molded them."

Anderson said she was loving "The Casual Vacancy" ? once she'd got over the change from stories of the boy wizard and his Hogwarts chums.

"There's swearing and sex," she said. "It's a bit of a shock."

"The Casual Vacancy" is already at No. 1 on Amazon's U.S. chart, and bookmaker William Hill put 2-1 odds on it outselling "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which shifted 2.6 million copies in Britain on its first day.

Reviews have been mixed. The Associated Press judged it a challenging but rewarding read full of emotion and heart.

However, The New York Times' influential critic, Michiko Kakutani, was damning.

"The real-life world she has limned in these pages is so willfully banal, so depressingly cliched that 'The Casual Vacancy' is not only disappointing ? it's dull," she said.

The Guardian newspaper's reviewer, Theo Tait, said it was "no masterpiece, but it's not bad at all: intelligent, workmanlike, and often funny."

The Independent's Boyd Tonkin found the sometimes "long-winded and laborious" writing soared when Rowling focused on her teenage characters.

Others, though, felt the lack of likable characters might alienate readers and Daily Mail reviewer Jan Moir slammed Rowling's stark focus on Pagford's haves and have-nots as the work of a "left-leaning demagogue" painting "a bleak and rather one-sided vision of life in modern England."

It's likely nothing Rowling publishes will ever match the success of the Potter books, which have sold more than 450 million copies around the world.

But booksellers are confident "The Casual Vacancy" will be one of the year's best-sellers, whatever reviewers say.

"A lot of children have grown up with Harry Potter. They're now adults who love books," Susan Sinclair, divisional manager for the Foyles bookstore chain, said.

"I think it's going to be a really big seller at Christmas. It'll be an easy gift ? but also a good one."

Netanyahu's 'red line': Does drawing a line actualy work?

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu literally drew a 'red line' on a simple diagram of Iran's nuclear program. How have red lines worked out in the past?

By Robert H. Reid,?Associated Press / September 28, 2012

In a dramatic gesture, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew a "red line" on a diagram of Iran's nuclear program and called on the world to do the same to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons ? a step the Iranians insist they don't intend to take.

Red lines, Netanyahu declared, "don't lead to war." Instead, he argued Thursday before the U.N. General Assembly that "red lines prevent war" by making clear the limits of international tolerance.

Eytan Gilboa, an expert on U.S.-Israel relations at Bar Ilan University, said red lines are considered less severe a warning than an ultimatum, which includes a threat of consequences.

History shows that the effectiveness of such warnings often depends on a country's resolve to follow through and accept the consequences.

Line in the sand

On August 2, 1990, Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein sent soldiers and tanks into neighboring Kuwait and annexed the tiny, oil-rich nation as Iraq's 19th province. Six days later, President George H. W. Bush told Americans that "a line in the sand has been drawn" and ordered U.S. troops to Kuwait's neighbor Saudi Arabia.

Armed with a U.N. Security Council resolution and congressional authorization to use force, U.S. and allied jets launched air attacks on Baghdad and other Iraqi targets. The ground assault began Feb. 24 and within days the Iraqis had been driven out of Kuwait. Iraq accepted a cease-fire on March 3 and Kuwaiti sovereignty was restored.

Cuban missile crisis

One of history's most dangerous red-line moments came in October 1962 when U.S. President John F. Kennedy revealed to the world that the Soviet Union had been installing missile sites in Cuba, and demanded that Premier Nikita Khrushchev remove them. For 13 tense days, the world seemed headed for nuclear war. Kennedy declared a quarantine on all offensive military equipment headed for Cuba ? effectively a "red line" around the Caribbean island nation ? and threatened to turn back any ships carrying armaments. For their part, the Soviets tested a 300-kiloton hydrogen bomb as a reminder of Moscow's military might.

NDP Children and Family critic demands change to - Cknw.com

Shane Woodford | Email news tips to shane.woodford@corusent.com
9/26/2012

The NDP are condemning the provincial government for aborting the fall sitting of the legislature after the latest update on child poverty in BC.

?Children and Family critic Claire Trevena says the report shows politicians need to be working on solutions in Victoria.

?She calls a disproportionately large number of first nations kids affected by child poverty a "huge problem."

?"Which underlines why we need to have a province wide poverty reduction plan the Minister has heard directly from some of these communities that have a pilot project and these communties are saying it doesn't work the way you have it because the Ministery of Children and Families is involved we have to have a province wide approach."

?Trevena calls the deaths of 101 children either in foster care or recieving services by the ministry, a tragedy.

?"There is clearly something going very wrong when a child in care dies we have to really provide the best protection possible right the way through from birth all the way through teen and into young adulthood and I think we let our kids down there aren't the supports in place needed there are lots of pressures in many families facing severe poverty."

?Trevena says sweeping changes, and lots of them, is exactly the problem.

?"I think that one of the things that is really needed in this area is stability there has been too many sweeping changes I think that this is one of the things that has been a real problem for the Ministry of Children and Family Development that it has gone from one extreme to the other and back I think what we need is we need stability and we need to work on the root causes of why many times children end up in care and that is often times because of poverty."

?She says the province needs to work on root causes for child poverty.

(AP) ? Court records show "Sons of Anarchy" actor Johnny Lewis was released from jail a week before being found dead in his driveway after police say he apparently killed his landlady.

Los Angeles police said Thursday that the 28-year-old Lewis is the only suspect in the death of 81-year-old Catherine Davis, who was discovered slain inside the hillside home in Los Feliz.

Authorities say they are investigating Davis' death and that it appears she was beaten. They say the actor died Wednesday after climbing atop the home and either jumping or falling to the ground.

Lewis played Kip "Half-Sack" Epps in the FX show.

Lewis pleaded no contest to assault with a deadly weapon and attempted burglary in separate cases this year, according to records.

He enrolled in a drug, alcohol and psychiatric treatment program over the summer, the records show.

Lewis was released from county jail Sept. 21.

As a condition of his probation in both cases, he was ordered not to use narcotics.

Lewis' attorney Jonathan Mandel said Thursday he was "surprised" and "baffled" by the deaths.

Mandel declined to immediately comment on Lewis's criminal history or possible drug problems pending consideration of client confidentiality requirements.

Before Lewis was discovered Wednesday morning, neighbors reported hearing a woman screaming in the home, said Los Angeles Police Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

Neighbors also told authorities that a man had jumped a fence, assaulted a painter and homeowner next door and jumped back.

It's unclear whether drugs or alcohol were involved, but police are investigating that possibility based on the circumstances of the crime, Smith said.

Lewis had a career spanning more than a decade, mainly in small roles. He played Ricky in the 2007 movie "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator ? Requiem" and was Dennis 'Chili' Childress for two seasons on TV's "The O.C."

His role in "Sons of Anarchy" came in 2008 and 2009.

White matter, old dogs, and new tricks

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Most people equate "gray matter" with the brain and its higher functions, such as sensation and perception, but this is only one part of the anatomical puzzle inside our heads. Another cerebral component is the white matter, which makes up about half the brain by volume and serves as the communications network.

The gray matter, with its densely packed nerve cell bodies, does the thinking, the computing, the decision-making. But projecting from these cell bodies are the axons?the network cables. They constitute the white matter. Its color derives from myelin--a fat that wraps around the axons, acting like insulation.

Alex Schelgel, first author on a paper in the August 2012 Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, has been using the white matter as a landscape on which to study brain function. An important result of the research is showing that you can indeed "teach old dogs new tricks." The brain you have as an adult is not necessarily the brain you are always going to have. It can still change, even for the better.

"This work is contributing to a new understanding that the brain stays this plastic organ throughout your life, capable of change," Schlegel says. "Knowing what actually happens in the organization of the brain when you are learning has implications for the development of new models of learning as well as potential interventions in cases of stroke and brain damage."

Schlegel is a graduate student working under Peter Tse, an associate professor of psychological and brain sciences and a coauthor on the paper. "This study was Peter's idea," Schlegel says. "He wanted to know if we could see white matter change as a result of a long-term learning process. Chinese seemed to him like the most intensive learning experience he could think of."

Twenty-seven Dartmouth students were enrolled in a nine-month Chinese language course between 2007 and 2009, enabling Schlegel to study their white matter in action. While many neuroscientists use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in brain studies, Schlegel turned to a new MRI technology, called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). He used DTI to measure the diffusion of water in axons, tracking the communication pathways in the brain. Restrictions in this diffusion can indicate that more myelin has wrapped around an axon.

"An increase in myelination tells us that axons are being used more, transmitting messages between processing areas," Schlegel says. "It means there is an active process under way."

Their data suggest that white matter myelination is precisely what was seen among the language students. There is a structural change that goes along with this learning process. While some studies have shown that changes in white matter occurred with learning, these observations were made in simple skill learning and strictly on a "before and after" basis.

"This was the first study looking at a really complex, long-term learning process over time, actually looking at changes in individuals as they learn a task," says Schlegel. "You have a much stronger causal argument when you can do that."

The work demonstrates that significant changes are occurring in adults who are learning. The structure of their brains undergoes change.

"This flies in the face of all these traditional views that all structural development happens in infancy, early in childhood," Schlegel says. "Now that we actually do have tools to watch a brain change, we are discovering that in many cases the brain can be just as malleable as an adult as it is when you are a child or an adolescent."

Being a minor and legally accepting payments online? - Web ...

I'm under 18, but I'm ready to start an online business - specifically a company that specializes in getting other young internet users their own custom websites.

I have the funds required to start such a business, but I'm worried about legally accepting payments online. My parents would be willing to sign off on anything, but not willing to use their own accounts for anything (eg. making their PayPal into a business account with their name on it) - don't ask me why, they just aren't willing to do that.

I already have a PayPal Student account, but from what I've read in their TOS and from other people online is that I can't operate a business with that account - that I run a high risk of being limited.

Does anyone have suggestions from payment processors that allow minors to take payments as a business? Thanks in advance

You might just have to wait until you're 18

You'll need to have a parent or legal guardian obtain the gateway accounts. The only way around this that I am aware of is to be emancipated, but you'd want to talk to an attorney and, honestly, I wouldn't recommend that route.

Since you are not 18 and assuming you are from USA , you can not legally sign any contract nor own any business. Thus you can not accept payment online ( and offline in various situation).
I would suggest you to hold onto your fund and wait till you are legally mature .

The way to do this is to have a legal entity.

Then you provide your business details, EIN etc. Certain areas allow states to be registered at lower age levels so just research.

Just find a place to register with no age req. =)

From what I hear you can do is to get your parents to register your business and you be the only employee of that until you're 18 when you'll then be legally allowed to "take over" the business.

Hm, perhaps I phrased my OP wrong. I don't really want to register an official business, but I want to be able to accept maybe 50 transactions a month, and then be able to use that money.

Is there a way I could do this by myself?

I would honestly recommend that you do register a business. Especially if you're selling something.

Would your parents not be happy about being the "account holder" for the PayPal account where from their it can be linked to your bank, card and what not?

Considering you would have to pay taxes etc. You should really know what you are doing. You could also be putting your parents in a liability situation.

Our 16 year old twin daughters and our 13 year old daughter own an internet radio station that's been in operation since 2004, previously owned by their older sisters that are now married.

They have a bank account with us as the co signers on the account. They also have a Paypal account that's in our names dba as the name of their radio station. They have a membership for their radio station based on membership donation.

Their mom and I control the finances of their business. For them to write a check one of us have to co sign the check. We've had no issues with them and with the profits they're making all of that is going into their college funds as a tax free investment.

The way we're handling things is teaching them they must take care of their money, run their business legally, cannot waste their money, accounting, banking and straight up business management.

If you're under the legal age to own a business then I would suggest you get some adult help and learn some smart business practices from them, or you may end up being an also ran and hiding from your clients.

Good luck on your business venture.

There is no such legal thing as an "unofficial" business. I don't know about other states, but in California, a minor cannot enter in to any legal contract without parental/guardian consent/co-sign, etc. My advice? Focus on school, go to a good college, wait to run your business. There is PLENTY of time to do that after doing the things you should do when you're young, like getting a degree. Get it done and out of the way.

@Danny247 - there are ways to do it but you will need the cooperation/assistance of a parent and/or guardian.

I tend to agree with the others though, I would wait until I was 18. Heck, when I was 10~12 I was dreaming of having my own servers colocated and starting my own hosting business... I know what it's like to want to do something and feeling that you can do it, but not legally being able to do it [at least, not easily].

I'm 26 going on 27 now, if that puts anything into perspective for you.

I think Bruc's is the best suggestion.

I don't know about now but I remember my mom opening my bank account in my name when I was 10 and I used that account until I was an adult.

I had all sorts of after school jobs and so forth from 14, cashing cheques, saving money, and being responsible. Do hard work, get paid, get what you want...although when I was 14 I didn't even know about BBS's yet, so times are a bit different. But I started investing into my prior business from 16 and turned it into a full time business when I was older.

Unless you (or your parents) have to something to hide, and since online businesses are a bit different and have the potential of all sorts of scams, going through your parents would be the best route. Look at it as 1 year training to get you on your own feet when you turn 18.

I find this comment very offensive. I'm a young entrepreneur who also wants to better the internet by providing other young teens the ability to mark their territory on the internet with their own website. Not all parents are as understanding as "bruc" is, and that's not anything that I can control.

As for everyone else, your advice is great and I'm really going to listen to it. Can someone just outline the steps I'd need to take in order to be able to do this? Just in a brief way, like first I'd need to get a bank account and so on. I just want to be able to present this information to my parents in a way that shows them everything they'd be required to do.
